Best upcoming smartphones 2017: The iPhone X, Google Pixel 2 XL and Huawei Mate 10 see the year out

We’re coming to the end of 2017 now, and with the Samsung’s Galaxy S8, Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium, HTC’s U11 and OnePlus 5, already out there, there aren’t many major releases left. Apple and Google have shown their hands, with the flagship handsets – the Google Pixel 2 XL and Apple iPhone X – are known, even if they won’t be reaching buyers hands for a little while yet.

Upcoming smartphones 2017: The release dates you NEED to know

Upcoming smartphones in 2017: The handsets to wait for

1. Apple iPhone X – 3 November 2017

The iPhone 8 is in eager hands, but the biggest Apple fans are holding off for the iPhone X – the edge-to-edge display AMOLED beast. You can read our full hands-on review here, and it’s a very shiny piece of kit indeed. Whether or not it’s £1,000 worth of shiny is something that we’ll have to mull over very carefully when review units reach our desks in the next few weeks.

2. Google Pixel 2 XL – 15 November 2017

The Google Pixel 2 XL isn’t here for a few more weeks, but our review units are here already. Bad news: although on paper it looks like a world beater, its subpar screen makes it a handset that’s impossible to recommend. The good news is that none of the teething problems seem to affect the regular Pixel 2, so if you like your phones Googly, that’s the one to go for.

3. Huawei Mate 10 – Late October 2017

The good news, if you like your phones on the larger side, is that the Pixel XL 2 will be getting a chunky rival in the form of the Huawei Mate 10. We’ve already gone hands-on with it, and it seems like another solid handset from Huawei and – whisper it – early signs show a camera that could end up being best in class…
