Taking into account the coverage, reliability and data speeds of EE, O2 and Vodafone, analytics firm RootMetrics ranked London 13 out of 16 in terms of overall mobile performance. Following hundreds of thousands of individual tests across the UK’s biggest metropolitan areas, Manchester took the number-one slot, followed by Birmingham and Liverpool.

Why is the signal in London so lacking? RootMetrics’ European general manager Scott Stonham suggests the sheer size of the population has a lot to answer for, as does the interference of tall buildings.

“Providing good mobile coverage in London is always going to be difficult due to the density of the population, the architecture and changes in demand on capacity,” said Stonham.

“Our data shows there is still some room for improvement in some of the UK’s most populous areas, and more needs to be done to ensure a good mobile service – a vital part of a city’s basic infrastructure.”
