Dell Inspiron R won't get touchscreens in UK

Dell mysteriously withholds touchscreens from its latest Inspiron range refresh, despite offering them in US

Dell has given UK-specific details of its new range of Windows 8 Inspiron laptops announced at CES 2013 - but while the range should receive a welcome battery-life boost thanks to larger six-cell batteries and low-voltage Sandy Bridge CPUs, the optional touchscreens announced in the US market are nowhere in sight.

The US versions of the Inspiron 15R and 17R made headlines this week when Dell announced touchscreen options would be available from around $650 (around £400), but a Dell spokesperson confirmed to PC Pro that "none of the [Inspirons announced at CES] available in the UK will have a touchscreen".

Laptop buyers will have to make do with other improvements made to the range. The Inspiron R laptops will use Intel’s ultra low-voltage Sandy Bridge CPUs. In combination with higher capacity cells, that should mean better battery life, although a statement from Dell stopped short of claiming a figure in hours.

The new machines will be thinner and lighter than earlier Inspirons: with the default four-cell battery each machine will be less than an inch thick, and the series overall is 17% thinner and 15% lighter than last year’s models.

The new systems are split into two groups - the standard Inspiron 15 and Inspiron 17 are 15.6in and 17.3in laptops respectively. The Inspiron 15 has a 1,366 x 768 display while the Inspiron 17 has a 1,600 x 900 panel. Both basic Inspirons are specced with Celeron processors at their lowest price: the 15in version can be specced up to a Core i3 while the 17in Inspiron can be outfitted with up to a Core i5.

The Inspiron R range shares basic specification with the base-level laptops, but can be outfitted with Full HD screens and up to Core i7 processors. Customers will also be able to specify a range of colours.

The Inspiron R series starts at £399 or £429 for the 15in and 17in respectively, while the basic 15in version can be had from £299 for the 15in Inspiron or £349 for the 17in one (all prices include VAT).

The entire range is available today.
