Intel to boost Thunderbolt to 40Gbits/sec

Next-gen compatible product will handle transfer rates of up to 40Gbits/sec, according to leak

Intel’s upcoming "Alpine Ridge" hardware will feature transfer rates of up to 40Gbits/sec, according to a leaked slide published on Chinese tech blog VR Zone.

The slide, displayed below, shows significant improvements in Intel's Thunderbolt connector, in terms of specs and compatibility, as well as power consumption.

If the slide is to be believed, Alpine Ridge will have double the bandwidth of the current Falcon Ridge controller, increasing data transfer rates from 20Gbits/sec to 40Gbits/sec.

It will also feature support for the third generation of the PCI-e bus, and consume 50% less power than Falcon Ridge.

There is also a new connector design detailed, which the slide claims will offer system charging of up to 100 watts over a single cable.

This could see Ultrabooks using the new technology for charging, doing away with round DC jacks and powering up the same way tablets and smartphones do instead.

The connectors will be only 3mm thick, while adapters for backward compatibility will also be made available.

A graphic included in the slide that shows the layout of the new controller also hints at a new CPU codenamed “Skylake”.

Many of the details on the slide line up with the improvements made between the original Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2, including the doubling of video and data transfer rates and arrangements for backwards compatibility.

However, users eager to get their hands on the new technology will have to wait, as it is not scheduled for release until 2015.

PC Pro contacted Intel regarding the leak, but had not received a response at the time of publication.
