Sony has unveiled its next Android tablet, the Xperia Tablet Z, in Japan.

The Xperia Tablet Z is one of the thinnest 10.1in tablets we've yet seen at 6.9mm, and it's certainly the lightest, weighing an impressive 495g.

That compares favourably to the 9.4mm and 652g of the latest iPad, and the 9.2mm and 602g of the Nexus 10. Sony also claimed the Tablet Z is waterproof and dustproof.

Despite slimming down, Sony has packed in a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a 6,000mAh battery, all powering a 10.1in 1080p display.

The Xperia Tablet Z runs Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), has an 8.1-megapixel rear camera, and is listed with both NFC and LTE chips - although it remains to be seen which territories will retain those features.

It will come in black or white. Sony has no information on UK availability or pricing yet.
