Watch robots fall over like drunks at closing time

There have been a lot of scary-looking robots around recently. The past month alone has seen news of angry AI, injury-adaptive machines, leaping predators, cartoon robots and programmed samurai.

A quick scan of all that and you wouldn’t be blamed for stocking up on EMP grenades. So what better way to put it all into context than with a video of robots face-planting and staggering around like they’re in Croydon on a Friday night?

The video comes from the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Robotics Challenge, which took place over the weekend in Pomona, California.

The competition saw robots from across the globe compete for $3.5 million’s (£2.3 million) worth of prizes. As well as not falling over, the robots had to successfully drive a car, turn off a valve and cut through a wall – all in the name of encouraging the development of disaster-relief technology.

The winning robot was DRC-Hubo, built by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).
