ViewSonic’s newest monitor promises high-end, high-resolution performance for a little more than £600. The huge, 2,560 x 1,440 IPS panel is lit by a wide-gamut GB-LED backlight, and ViewSonic colour-calibrates each display to guarantee an average Delta E of 3.
Physically, the VP2772 looks almost identical to its predecessor, the VP2770-LED. The huge, claw-like stand mounts the VP2772 firmly to the desk – even when the 135mm height-adjustable stand is extended to its maximum – and the assembly remains stable and wobble-free in both landscape and portrait modes.
Connectivity has taken a leap forwards compared to the old model. In addition to DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort and mini-DisplayPort inputs, the VP2772 sports DisplayPort throughput for daisy-chaining a second monitor. The four-port USB hub has been upgraded, too: every port supports SuperSpeed USB 3.
The VP2772’s IPS panel is an even greater improvement. The 27in screen diagonal and 2,560 x 1,440 resolution remain the same, but the new GB-LED backlight allows the VP2772 to cover a claimed 99% of the Adobe RGB colour space. Delve through the monitor’s onscreen display (which is controlled by four touch-sensitive buttons) and there are both factory-calibrated sRGB and Adobe RGB picture modes, too.
In practice, it serves up great images with impressive colour fidelity. In the Adobe RGB mode, we measured a contrast ratio of 715:1, an average Delta E of 1.5 and a maximum Delta E of 3.7. With the sRGB mode activated, the panel served up an almost identical contrast ratio of 714:1, and scored an average Delta E of 1.7 and a maximum Delta E of 4.1. A gently reflective finish helps keep things vibrant and grain-free, but it isn’t truly glossy, so glare doesn’t become a problem.
There’s room for improvement. Inexplicably, the sRGB mode locks the ViewSonic’s backlight at 218cd/m2, which is far brighter than we’d recommend for professional usage. The backlight is uneven, too, with dimmer patches noticeable in the top left and top right of the panel. We measured a variation in brightness of 18% across the panel, which is disappointing.
Despite these flaws, ViewSonic has done a fine job of providing professional-class colour fidelity, and solid connectivity, for sensible money. If you can’t afford to pay the huge premium for a top-flight monitor such as Eizo’s ColorEdge CG276, the VP2772 provides a taste of the high end for a fraction of the price.
