Apple releases official Apple Watch charging dock – just in time for Christmas
Following a leak from German tech website grobgebloggt.de, Apple has confirmed it’s releasing a new, official charging dock for the Apple Watch. Featuring the clean design language we’ve come to expect from Apple, the dock is compatible with both 38mm and 42mm Apple Watches, and will cost £65. According to the Apple Store website, there’s currently a dispatch time of one day.
Just as shown in the leaked pictures, the official “magnetic charging dock” is a white, doughnut-styled structure. The actual charging interface for the Apple Watch sits in the middle of the dock and features a chrome finish – similar to the charger provided with the mid-range “Watch” version of the wearable.
Interestingly, it can be put in two modes: one mode lets Apple Watch owners charge the device flat, while another enables the Apple Watch to be charged whilst on its side – triggering the landscape Nightstand mode. In this configuration, the smartwatch’s Digital Crown also acts as an alarm snooze button.
Like the charger provided with the Apple Watch, the new dock uses a Lightning to USB connector, and comes with a 5W power adaptor.
A sensible move
We were surprised Apple didn’t release a dock for the Apple Watch when it was launched, and it makes even more sense to release one just before Christmas. What’s more, the Apple Watch charger solves the Nightstand problem of the Apple Watch.
Although we loved the Nightstand feature when it was first introduced, charging the Watch on its side previously felt like a somewhat ad-hoc solution. By enabling a Nightstand mode on its official charger, Apple has just neatened the Apple Watch bedside experience.
