Mastercard treats its Apple Pay Londoners to free Monday Tube adventures

For Londoners, almost nothing is as depressing as taking the Tube first thing on a freezing Monday morning. So if you spot someone looking even slightly perky on the Central line next Monday, you could be looking at an iPhone-toting Mastercard user, who can at least say their tedious journey to work is on someone else’s dime.

Mastercard is keen to get its customers to adopt Apple Pay, and nothing says “try me” more than free money. Simply use your Mastercard and Apple Pay to touch in and out of London Buses, London Underground, London Trams, Docklands Light Railway, London Overground, TfL Rail, Emirates Air Line, and most National Rail in the capital on Mondays between 23 November and 14 December, and Mastercard will repay you up to £27.90 for each day’s travel.

The only slight disappointment is that the Thames Clipper boat service isn’t included – sadly, a couple of cheeky Hop Stuff craft beers on the boat home after work isn’t an option. Sorry about that.

The offer is running for the next three Mondays – the final day is Monday 14th December – and allows you to travel between 4:30am until 1am the following Tuesday morning, so even people on early- or late-shifts should be able to take some advantage. Your cash will take anything up to 28 days to be refunded, but with the maximum spend of £27.90 per day covering Zones 1-9 and beyond, there’s the opportunity to go on some epic London-based adventures. Or to Watford.

President of Mastercard UK and Ireland, Mark Barnett, said: “Now that Apple Pay has arrived, we want to encourage travellers on London’s transport network to try it out and give them another convenient option to pay for their travel. What better way to do this than to offer Mastercard customers using Apple Pay the chance to travel for free over the next four consecutive Mondays.”

Having neither an iPhone, Apple Pay nor Mastercard, my Monday commutes will remain as uneventful as ever in December, so enjoy your freebie Mastercarders. Go on, go wild: take the day trip of a lifetime to Watford Junction in Zone 9, just for the hell of it.

Of course, there are some who believe the Tube is too fast…
