The prospect of a sequel to Blade Runner, one of the most iconic science-fiction films ever made, was up until recently weighed down by a crown of groans. “Why do they need to continue a story that was so nicely, ambiguously, complete in a single film?” Then the first trailer for director Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 hit the internet, and people started getting excited about returning to a replicant-filled dystopia.
Now, a batch of new images have been released, showcasing scenes from the film and behind-the-scenes shots of cast and crew. Among these is a picture of Officer K, played by Ryan Gosling, beside Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard. There’s also an image of Gosling and actress Ana de Armas, in an as-yet-unexplained role, and a picture of Ford with producer Ridley Scott.
Not a great deal is known about the upcoming film, except that Harrison Ford will return as the protagonist from Ridley Scott’s first film, and will be joined by Ryan Gosling as Officer K. Both of these get a look-in during the brief reveal trailer, as do a variety of dystopian vistas – caked in red and yellow light.
Aside from Ford and Gosling, the new film will feature Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, Mackenzie Davis and Jared Leto. It’s due to debut on 6 October 2017, so plenty more time to wring the internet for every drop of conceivable excitement. Check it out below.
Then, get in the mood by listening to Vangelis’ iconic theme for the original film.
