Asustor AS-609RD review

The Asustor AS-609RD is the most versatile of Asustor’s SMB NAS appliances. The hardware isn’t brand new, but the company has refined its Asustor Data Master (ADM) operating system, and the latest 2.1 update has added a variety of new features.

The AS-609RD has nine hot-swap SATA drive bays and dual 350W redundant PSUs. A word to the wise, however: if you don’t need power redundancy, you can save around £130 by opting for the AS-609RS model.

All of Asustor’s business appliances use a 2.13GHz Atom CPU, and have 1GB of DDR3 memory, which is upgradeable to 3GB. The panel to the left of the bays has buttons for power and ID, plus status LEDs, but the AS-609RD does away with the LCD display and control pad found on the desktop models.

For testing, we loaded up a trio of 2TB WD Enterprise Se SATA III drives, and used the Control Center utility to create a RAID5 array. Performance is quite respectable: copies of a 2.52GB video to and from a mapped share returned read and write speeds of 105MB/sec and 95MB/sec.

General backup speeds are also good: copying our 22.4GB collection of 10,500 small files from a Windows Server 2012 R2 system averaged 66MB/sec. Using Asustor’s handy Backup Plan Windows utility to copy the same test folder returned a slightly slower 64MB/sec.

Updating the system to the ADM 2.1 OS brings in plenty of new features. For starters, Asustor’s WebStorage app provides an alternative to Dropbox. Signing in to the app with a WebStorage account creates a predefined sync folder on the appliance. We loaded the WebStorage agent on Windows 8 and 8.1 clients and linked them to the same account. From here on, any files dropped into the client folder or on the appliance were synced across all systems using the same account.
