Canon i-Sensys LBP7780Cx review

Canon’s latest flagship colour laser pushes print speed to 32ppm, but keeps a keen eye on value. Aimed at SMBs and busy workgroups, the LBP7780Cx also comes with a built-in duplex unit that’s fast enough to make double-sided printing the norm.

Build quality is good, and it’s tough enough to take some punishment, with a maximum monthly duty cycle of 75,000 pages. It supports Canon’s multifunctional embedded application platform (MEAP), which allows it to run custom Java apps for integration into printer-management systems such as Canon’s uniFLOW.

Running costs are cheap compared to similarly priced colour lasers. Mono pages cost only 1.1p each; colour pages are 7.3p a pop.

The LCD display and control panel aren’t particularly easy to use, but the printer’s web interface offers quick access to all the features on offer from the front panel and more.

Basic access restrictions using IP address lists are available, and there are options to print emails sent to the printer. Direct printing of image files via FTP is also possible, and users without the printer driver loaded can call on the web interface’s Direct Print feature.

Print speeds are fine, with a basic 32-page Word document printing in one minute flat. Our challenging 24-page colour DTP document dropped the speed to 24ppm, but the duplexer blitzed our 32-side Word document in only 1min 6secs.

Print quality is excellent, with pin-sharp text. The printer’s Vivid Photo driver setting produced colour photos with rich, vibrant colours and little banding.

A combination of high print speeds and low running costs makes the LBP7780Cx a fine choice as a cheap departmental workhorse. MEAP support won’t cut any ice with small businesses, but output quality is extremely good, and it’s quiet, too.
