Earlier this month, Audi announced that it will be leaving the WEC championship, shocking pretty much everyone involved in motorsport. For the past 16 years, the German marque has entirely dominated both Le Mans 24 and endurance racing in general; first with its petrol-engined R8, and later with several diesel-powered challengers. In more numerical terms, Audi has won THIRTEEN of the past 17 Le Mans 24 hour races, with only Porsche, Peugeot and Bentley getting a look in otherwise.

From next year onwards, Audi will look to strengthen its presence in Formula E, but it has just one last WEC race to do – and it’s next weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix. To see the Audi WEC programme off in style, I’ve found some onboard video of the team’s last Le Mans win, which took place in 2014.

In the first video you’ll be riding with the winning #2 car in the day, and in the second you’ll be onboard as the race goes into the night. And those crazy whining noises? They’re the sound of the car’s energy recovery systems, storing energy on the way into corners, and deploying it on the way out.
