Jaguar Land Rover just won’t stand for its customers being stuck at the traffic lights as it reveals it’s working on groundbreaking technology help drivers safely beat the red light and keep traffic flowing.
The Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) system, currently being trialled on Jaguar F-Pace cars in Coventry, tells drivers the speed at which they have to drive in order to clear the green light. It advises the driver to accelerate a little to pass the lights before they turn red, or if they’re already red, how slow to drive to avoid coming to a stop.
This system is part of Jaguar’s push into integrating Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2X) technology. V2X allows cars to tap into contextual information from road infrastructures, such as traffic lights or road signs, in order to give informed suggestions to the driver. It’s a key technology in the development of smart cities like Singapore’s own trials.
In Jaguar’s F-Pace prototype, the car will “communicate” with the traffic light in order to determine when it will change colour. Other V2X systems Jaguar is working on include the ability to find free spaces in a car park, and advance warning if an emergency vehicle is approaching.

By driving at appropriate speeds through traffic lights, drivers will theoretically reduce congestion and emissions. By not stopping at lights, the reduction in braking and thus reduction in accelerating will ensure vehicles aren’t sat burning excess fuel and so air quality can improve in city centres.
“This cutting-edge technology will radically reduce the time we waste at traffic lights”, explained Oriol Quintana-Morales, Jaguar Land Rover’s connected technology research engineer. “It has the potential to revolutionise driving by creating safe, free-flowing cities that take the stress out of commuting. Our research is motivated by the chance to make future journeys as comfortable and stress-free as possible for all our customers.”
As well as being a warm relief for the environmental and city congestion, Jaguar’s GLOSA system shows an intelligent implementation of AI and elements of driverless cars, serving as a soft-launch for future automatic cars the company decides to produce.
