CCL PCPro-003 review

Price when reviewed

We don’t predict a long life for the sliding flap on top of the case that conceals two USB 2 ports, along with headphone and microphone sockets – but it’s better to leave these exposed anyway. They make it easy for pupils to plug in peripherals such as robots and digital cameras, listen to audio in private, or connect an external microphone to make audio recordings.

The front connecting ports mean students will rarely need to scrabble around the back of the computer, but if more connectivity is required the PCPro-003 delivers it in spades. The rear offers four USB 2 ports, two USB 3, D-SUB, two HDMI, eSATA, RJ-45 and audio connections.

The i3-Edu-Mini also included a DVI port, but this is no great loss, as HDMI is fast replacing DVI as the digital video port of choice, and it’s rare to find a monitor without a D-SUB connector. If you have older monitors with DVI ports, but no HDMI connectivity, you can always specify a DVI port when ordering your computer, or use an adapter.

Putting together your own PC specifications obviously involves more planning, but it does mean you get a machine that suits your needs – and you aren’t paying for superfluous features. You’re also buying a computer that’s more functional than flash but, in our view, that’s no bad thing. A major consideration, however, is the service and support you receive from the bespoke PC manufacturer, which is why we welcome the on-site warranty that comes with the PCPro-003.

CCL set the bar high with the i3-Edu-Mini, and the PCPro-003 is more than up to the task. It’s robust, compact, quiet and well-specified. All this could also be said of the PC Specialist MPC-2100, but CCL’s icing on the cake is its two-year, on-site support. If you’ve never considered going down the bespoke PC route before, this machine offers an excellent reason for doing so.
