Are you selling a house and considering what to do with your Ring doorbell? Or, maybe you want to gift someone a pre-owned model. There are many reasons you might want to give someone a used Ring doorbell. The problem is that you can’t just give it like you would any other product. First of all, you need to change the ownership of the device.

But what are the steps to do this? Can you do it alone? Or, do you need to contact someone from Ring to help you? In this guide, we’ll give you answers to these burning questions.
Transferring Ownership
You already know that when you first buy a Ring doorbell, you will need to set it up. You do this by creating an account. That account then becomes the owner of the device. Those who will become new owners will run through the whole set up process the same way you did.
But, once they install everything, the device will disappear from your account, so you will no longer be able to access it.
What do you need to do to start the process of transferring ownership? We’ll cover that in the next few sections.
Canceling the Payment Method
First things first. If you want to transfer the ownership to another person, you need to cancel your payment method that was tied to the Ring account. Don’t forget about this step!
If you don’t do this, then future fees will still be your responsibility, even though the Ring doorbell has changed ownership. Without further ado, let’s see the steps for canceling the payment method:
- Open your normal browser and go to the Ring site.
- On the upper right corner, you’ll see a ‘Log in’ button. Click on it.
- Enter your log-in details.
- After you log in, your name will be on the top right corner. Tap on it.
- Next, go to ‘Account.’
- Look for your credit card and click on the ‘X’ symbol next to it to cancel the payment.
Remember, it’s possible to access the Ring website and follow these steps both from your smartphone and computer.

Canceling the Plan
If you have a paid plan with Ring, you’re probably wondering if it’s possible to cancel it. And the good news is that it is indeed. Ring offers its users the option to cancel the plan and get a refund. Keep in mind you only get money back for the period you didn’t use your Ring subscription to store video on the cloud.
How exactly do you cancel the prepaid plan? You can go to their store and talk to the staff in person, provided there’s a store near you. Or, go to this link to check out other ways to contact them.
Deleting the Device from Your Account
Once you finish all the steps above, it’s time to delete the device from your account. Here’s how to do so:
- Launch the Ring app.
- Tap on the three-line menu on the upper left part of the screen.
- Then, click on ‘Devices.’
- Choose the device you want to delete.
- Next, click on ‘Device Settings’ and then ‘General Settings.’
- Finally, hit ‘Remove this Device.’
That’s it! You can follow these steps for all Ring devices. Keep in mind that removing a device from your account also deletes all videos and Event History. If there’s something important you need to keep, make sure to download this before proceeding with the steps above.
Removing Other Users
Only one user can be the owner of a Ring doorbell. However, others can be granted access to it too. For example, you might have had guests for a long time and decide to provide them with access to the unit. When you’re transferring ownership, the best practice is also to remove other users.
The steps are pretty straightforward. Let’s take a look at them:
- Launch the Ring app.
- Then, go ‘Settings.’
- Find ‘Users.’
- Tap on ‘Shared Users.’
- Finally, click on ‘Remove User.’
Resetting the Ring Device
Although this step isn’t mandatory, it gives both the original and new owners some peace of mind. Hard resetting the Ring doorbell completely removes Wi-Fi settings from the unit. Here’s how you can do this:
- Grab the device and remove the backplate.
- Then, press the orange button for about 20 seconds.
- Release the button.
- You’ll see the front of the device flashing. It means the device is performing a hard reset.
- Wait for the device to complete the process.
Note: If the original owner doesn’t do this and doesn’t delete the device, the new owner will have issues. They won’t be able to reset the unit on their own and have access to it. Instead, the original owner will get a message informing them of activity anytime the new owner tries resetting the device. In that case, owners should get in touch and solve the issue together.
You’re No Longer an Owner of the Ring Doorbell
When it’s time to move house, owners with Ring devices also need to think about transferring their ownership. Although it requires a couple of steps, the new owner will be grateful. Moreover, you won’t need to deal with potential ownership issues in the future.
