You’re going to need all the hard disk space you can lay your hands on when Windows Vista is released, and at just 20p per gigabyte the 400GB Samsung SpinPoint HD401LJ offers tremendous value for money. As with previous Samsung disks, the HD401LJ is almost silent, and with an average read speed of 62.5MB/sec it’s easily fast enough for almost any job, while the 174.5MB/sec burst speed is equally impressive. This is achieved using three high-density platters storing 133GB on each, plus a 16MB cache buffer. The rest of the specifications are par for the course: a SATA interface and 7,200rpm spindle speed. Ultimately, the SpinPoint is a great choice for everyone, but also ideal for a media centre PC – this much capacity in a single 3.5in disk is extremely handy in a small-form-factor chassis.
