No, this isn’t a novelty USB flash drive; it really is an AA battery that recharges over USB. When it runs out, just pop the cap off (it’s retained with strong elastic) and plug it into any powered USB port. They’ll also charge from any NiMH battery charger. The 1,300mAh-capacity cell fully charges in around six hours and has LEDs to show charge level. Moixa claims that battery memory isn’t much of a problem, so five-minute charges are an option, and each cell should charge around 500 times. In practice, the lower capacity (most alkaline-based cells are around 2,400mAh) means quicker discharges, so having a spare set is advisable. But, while £13 for two comparatively short-lived batteries is steep, they’re so convenient to recharge that they could be used all the time. And anything that encourages us all to stop throwing away used batteries has to be good too.
