Western Digital Caviar SE16 review
It seems like only yesterday we recommended the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (web ID: 88756), and marvelled that you could get 750GB of storage for just £234. A year down the line, and it’s time to marvel again. The SE16 provides 750GB, but for just 17p per GB. There are no obvious compromises – a 16MB buffer and spin speed of 7,200rpm mean that large file transfers should be easy, and our tests returned a fantastic sustained transfer rate of 76MB/sec with 100MB of large files – almost 10MB/sec faster than the Barracuda 7200.10 (which is now almost identical in price to the Caviar). The SE16 still isn’t the best value per gigabyte, with the Samsung SpinPoint P120 weighing in at 13p per GB, but this is the best value 750GB drive we’ve seen.
