Dell C2660dn review

Dell’s C2660dn is aimed at small businesses that want a low-cost, fast A4 colour laser. It’s also worth considering if good graphics output is required – we found quality to be among the best at this price point.

Text is razor-sharp, and mono photos show high levels of detail. Photos and business reports are clean and crisp, with only a hint of banding; transitions across complex fades are smooth; and colours are bold and lively.

It’s speedy, too. The C2660dn churned out a 27-page Word document in one minute; we recorded the same speed for complex colour DTP documents. Dell’s low-melt toner also plays its part – the time to first page was less than ten seconds.

Duplexing comes as standard, and is enabled by default. Double-sided prints are also fast, with speeds averaging 18ppm.

Installation is hassle-free. Dell’s quick-launch utility helps keep an eye on the status of consumables, and can run diagnostics. The web interface is equally informative, giving easy access to all settings.
It takes one click to register the printer with Google Cloud Print; the C2660dn then appears in the Windows 8 app. This allows you to send documents directly to the printer for free, but features such as cloud OCR are charged for.

Up to 100MB of memory can be used as a RAM disk, allowing users to send prints directly from the driver to a public or secure private mailbox. The printer is AirPrint-enabled, and Dell offers an optional wireless adapter but, at almost £100, it’s expensive.

Dell C660dn

As with all lasers, the cheaper the initial outlay, the higher the running costs. The C2660dn’s high-yield cartridges return mono and colour pages at 2.4p and 11.5p respectively. Pricier rivals such as Kyocera’s P6030cdn are much cheaper to run in the long-term, but cost more than twice as much to buy.

The C2660dn scores highly for its high-quality, speedy output. Running costs are also reasonable, making it good for SMBs on a tight budget.
