How To Edit Video on the iPhone 6S/6S Plus

Having an iPhone in your pocket means you have a device that is capable of so much more than the phones of the past. In fact, you have a device capable of capturing both photos and videos with ease, something that would’ve seemed like witchcraft even a decade or so ago. Photography and videography is a hobby of thousands of people all over the world, and it has never been easier to enjoy and partake in thanks to the iPhone. The 6S, in particular, has a powerful camera (that is capable of shooting sharing 4K) and is more than capable of getting you some great videos as well.

While capturing and sharing amazing videos is cool, what good is being able to record and capture pictures and videos without the ability to edit them and turn them into your own? Well thankfully, the iPhone 6S is more than capable of also editing the things you capture with a few helpful tools and features included. While it is capable of both photo and video editing, this guide will be looking only at the iPhone’s prowess when it comes to editing videos.

While the default video editing features on the iPhone 6S are quite basic, they do exist, and are certainly enough for small people. If you want to do higher level video editing, there are a ton of apps out there you can download to edit videos like a pro. So whether you just need to trim a video a little bit for easier sharing, or combine various clips and add sound to create a mini-movie, the iPhone can help you in both cases. This guide will tell you how to edit videos using both the default features on the iPhone 6S and third party applications you can download from the app store.

How To Edit Videos on the iPhone 6S Using the Default Features

As mentioned earlier, the iPhone is fairly limited when it comes to editing features that are native to the device. In fact, the only real kind of editing you can do to videos on the device is to trim the videos. So if you shoot a longer video or have some unnecessary parts to a video that need cutting out, you can do that right on the device. Thankfully, it is quite simple to do and won’t take more than a few minutes of your time most likely.

The first step is to launch the Photos app and then find the video you want to edit, and then tap on it to bring it up. Then, you need to tap the menu on the bottom right that looks like three lines with the circles on each line, that is the menu where all the editing is done. From there, you will be able to adjust how much or how little you want to trim off the video with a single finger.

All you have to do is to tap the far left of the timeline and drag the anchor to your desired starting length for the newly edited video. You can do the same with the other side of the anchor to choose where you want the video to end. Also, if you hold your finger down, you can expand the timeline of the video to give you a more precise look at exactly where you are trimming the video, down to the frame. Once you are satisfied with the length of your newly edited video, you can hit the Done button, and then decide to either save it as a new clip, or to trim the original clip itself.

Being able to change the colors and such while editing videos is also huge plus. While you cannot add filters to videos that have already been shot, you can shoot in black and white (or other filter color choices). That is about the only other thing that could really make your videos stand out from the default without downloading an application to edit. So if this trimming feature alone doesn’t satisfy your video editing needs, check out the next section for other (and more advanced) ways to edit your videos on the iPhone 6S thanks to the use of apps.

How To Edit Videos on the iPhone 6S Using Apps

If you want to do more advanced edits to the videos you have, you will need to download an app to help you out with that. Thankfully, the App Store is full of apps that can help you out. In fact, there are dozens upon dozens of different video editing apps out there to choose from. Some are free, while some might run you a couple of dollars or offer you in-app purchases. Each of these apps has a different list of features they have, and will present their content in a different way.

The good news is that most of them will be able to do things you would expect out of a quality and powerful video editing app. They should all offer you a ton more editing and customization options. These include things like applying filters and other visual effects, creating transitions, adding music and narration, mixing and matching clips and much more. They all feature a unique look and presentation and there is no harm in trying a few out and figuring out which you like best. Each has a different way of using the app, but most of the apps pride themselves on being quite simple, so you should not encounter any struggles trying to use them. Some of the best and most popular are Splice, iMovie, Cameo, and Apple’s own Clips app. These apps are all highly touted and will help you do editing jobs on your phone that you never thought possible.

So whether you edit videos with the default features or a third-party app, just know that the iPhone 6S has you covered when it comes to editing a wide range of videos. Now you can also edit videos on a desktop or a laptop and then send them to your iPhone, but with how many great features and options exist for the iPhone, you might as well do it right on the device itself.
