By default, your Samsung Galaxy S9 or S9+ is set to English. But you might prefer to use another language instead.
The good news is that it’s very simple to change the language settings on the S9 and S9+. Like with other recent Android phones, you can create a hierarchy of the languages you want to use.
First, let’s look at the best ways to add a new language to your phone.
How to Change the List of Languages
To change the list of languages used by your Galaxy S9/S9+, do the following:
Enter the Apps Screen – Simply swipe up or down from the center of your Home screen.
Select Settings – This option comes with a cog icon.
Go into General Management
Tap on ‘Language and input’
Tap on Add Language
Now you will see a list of languages you can add to your phone. When you select a language, you’ll be able to choose a regional dialect too.
When you tap on a language, it gets added to your phone. This means you can switch to that language when you’re texting or using an app. Additionally, the language will be added to your autocorrect options.
How to Switch the Language of Your Phone Commands
In addition to changing the messaging language, you can change the language of your phone’s functions. To do so, repeat the above steps.
Open the Apps Screen
Tap on Settings
Go into General Management
Select ‘Language and input’
All the languages you’ve added are listed here. To change the order of this list, tap and hold a language and then drag it.
To choose your phone’s system language, rearrange this list. Move your preferred language to the top of the list. Your phone will automatically switch to it. You can switch back to English by putting English back to the top of the list.
Changing from the Samsung Keyboard to Gboard
While Samsung’s native keyboard app is convenient, there are better keyboard apps available for free.
If you decide to switch to Gboard, you’ll have better autocorrect options. But even more importantly, Gboard is a good option for polyglots, as it supports many different languages and alphabets. If you can’t type in your preferred language with the Samsung keyboard, Gboard might be the best alternative.
To switch to this app, follow these steps:
Install Gboard from Google Play
Go into Settings > General Management > Language and Input
Tap on Default Keyboard
From the list of installed keyboard apps, select Gboard. From now on, this will be the keyboard you’ll use in every app. You can also add new languages to this app by tapping on Settings on top of the keyboard.
A Final Thought
Note that each new language makes the phone’s predictive text function work less efficiently. To delete a language from your list of system languages, go to Settings > General Management > Language and Input. Select a language and then hold. A delete option will appear at the top of your screen.
