What can you do if your Wifi is down? Relying on cellular data isn’t enough for most people. Instead of depleting your data quota, there are several ways you can try to get your Wifi back.

But where do you start?

Make Sure It’s Not the Router

The first thing you should do is ask if other internet users in your vicinity are having Wifi problems too. If so, you might want to contact your internet provider.

You can also try restarting your router. This is a good idea even if other devices using the same router still have Wifi. Firmware updates can make it difficult for some phone models to establish a connection.

Try Rebooting Your Wifi

Simply switching your phone off and powering it back up could help.

But if that doesn’t work, it might be time to turn off your Wifi. You can also make sure your phone forgets the Wifi data that it used before, or you can try a different DNS address. When you reconnect, you may be more successful.

Here is a step-by-step guide:

  1. Go Into Settings
  2. Select Connections
  3. Select the Wi-Fi Option

Here, there is an on/off toggle that you can use to turn your Wifi off for a while. You can turn your phone off and on before you try to switch this toggle back on.

If this works, you don’t have to go any further. Keep going otherwise.

  1. Tap on Wi-Fi to Erase Your Connection

Tap on the Wifi connection in question. You’ll see details about it. Tap on Forget. After you do this, the password for that connection will be erased.

  1. Try to Establish a New Connection

When you’re trying to reconnect to the network, you have to re-enter the password. If your Wifi returns, you’re done.

If not, you can try to change the DNS settings.  First, you’ll need to select Advanced Options.

  1. Tap on Show Advanced Options
  2. Go Into IP Settings

Most of the IP settings should stay as they are. But you can manually change the DNS server. Changing your DNS address might be the key to fixing your issue.

  1. Switch the Status from DHCP to Static
  2. Enter a New DNS Address
  3. Select Join to Establish Your Connection

A Different Approach

What if the above doesn’t work?

Instead of changing your Wifi connection, you can try to reset your network settings. It’s important to note that this approach will also erase the data about your Bluetooth connections and your cellular data usage.

Here is a quick guide to resetting network settings:

  1. Select Settings
  2. Go Into General Management
  3. Reset
  4. Tap on Reset Network Settings

Once again, you’ll need to reenter your Wifi passwords.

A Final Thought

If none of these approaches restore your Wifi, you may need to go through with a factory reset (or hard reset). The downside is that these resets get rid of all your data, including your contacts and photos. So before you perform one, you’ll need to back up everything.
