Sony has just released PlayStation Messages, a new iOS and Android app designed to make it easier to chat to your PlayStation Network friends. There’s already an app for the PS4 that allows players to watch streams, browse the PlayStation Store and more – but PlayStation Messages is solely for chatting.

In some ways it’s a Facebook Messenger for PS4 gamers. A post on the PlayStation website reads: “We know that Messages is the most-used feature of the PlayStation App, so we created the standalone PlayStation Messages app with a more streamlined design in order to get you into your Messages and communicating with your friends faster than ever before.”
As you’d expect from any modern chat app, PlayStation Messages lets players send each other video, voice and standard text messages – and it wouldn’t be completely without some PlayStation-specific Stickers. Sony also says the app comes with group chats, making it easy to discuss games with the rest of your party.
Will it be successful? We’re not sure. While the app does provide a useful alternative to those without a headset, we expect most gamers already have a WhatsApp conversation or iMessage group with all their multiplayer mates – so why use Sony’s app too?
