Independent titles Her Story, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Rocket League each won three categories at the 12th annual BAFTA Game Awards, with Fallout 4 taking the best game prize.

British development was out in force on Thursday 7 April, with UK studio The Chinese Room and UK developer Sam Barlow walking away with three BAFTAs. Batman: Arkham Knight won best British game, and episodic adventure Life is Strange won best story.

Jessica Curry, from Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture team The Chinese Room gave one of the most memorable speeches of the night, after winning the prize for best music. “I am a left wing feminist with a degenerative disease who tried to bring down a major publisher," said Curry. "It’s a miracle I’m here.”

Elsewhere, From Software's Lovecraftian RPG Bloodborne picked up best game design, while platformer Ori and the Blind Forest won the prize for artistic achievement. The BAFTA fellowship award went to John Carmack – a pioneer of 3D graphics, lead programmer of the original DOOM and arguably the father of the first person shooter genre. Carmack is currently CTO of Oculus VR.

TM: What would you say are your musical influences?

Jessica Curry: For the game: Very bucolic English sounds. Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Anglican choral music. In general: I love The Cardiacs. I love Joni Mitchell. I love Beethoven. I love a very weird and eclectic mix.
