Budding game developers are being encouraged to apply for government funding, with the UK Games Fund offering grants of up to £25,000 for successful bids.

Set up by UK Games Talent and Finance CIC, with the purpose of backing projects that stand to boost the UK games industry, the UK Games Fund has opened its third round of funding applications. The scheme has so far helped 50 developers, with more than £1.3 million in government grants.
“The UK is a world leader when it comes to making video games, and we’re determined to make sure this continues long into the future,” said minister of state for digital and culture, Matt Hancock MP.
“Our UK Games Fund has already helped many young games companies turn prototypes into a reality. Together with the government’s video-games tax reliefs, this shows how we’re supporting this dynamic sector to attract further investment and new talent.”
UK developer Sensible Object, which is readying to launch its physical-digital crossover tabletop game Beasts of Balance (previously known as Fabulous Beasts), was awarded a pot of funding in the scheme’s first round of funding. The company’s founder, Alex Fleetwood, had nice words to say about the whole thing.
“Launching any venture is fraught with risks, but creative businesses like game companies come with even more challenges, and the UK Games Fund is a very timely form of support for those that hope to grow and succeed in that area.
“The fund is well run, straightforward to apply for, and clear in its decision-making, making it a valuable asset to game companies like ours and the industry as a whole.”
We talked to Fleetwood at the beginning of this year about his game, and about the experience of working with Chinese manufacturers in Shenzhen.
