The best game of all time is about to get a sequel. No, not Half-Life. No, not Tetris. No, not Ocarina of Time. Look, this is going to take forever: the correct answer is Spelunky. Spelunky 2 is a thing, and I’m thrilled to say I can die a happy man.

Or more accurately, I can die a happy man thousands of times over, as I get to grips with the brutal mechanics of one of the most devious platform games ever made all over again. For the uninitiated, the original Spelunky was a rogue-like platformer that randomly generates levels every time you start. It’s packed with secrets, and the game can be completed in under eight minutes – though more realistically, you’ll just die a lot for days on end. Slowly, after hundreds of hours and thousands of deaths, you learn the grammar of the game, and figure out how to deal with whatever horrible configuration it throws at you.
We don’t know much about the sequel yet – other than that it exists and will be on PlayStation 4. It looks like the Spelunker has passed on the reigns to his daughter, and there will still be pugs, kapala helmets and the same adorable art style that softened the blow as you got crushed by spikes for the 658th time.
I can’t wait.
