Games with Gold: April 2018 is a good month for Xbox owners

Microsoft has unveiled its Games with Gold for April 2018, and unlike the somewhat patchy selection for March, this is a pretty solid haul, overall. For those not in the know, Xbox Gold subscribers get a number of games for free each month, which are theirs to keep for the duration of their subscription.

First up, from 1 April, is The Witness – the beautiful first-person puzzle game from Jonathan Blow, the man behind Braid. It’s gentle, relaxing and very, very hard, but it does come with an impressive average of 86% on Metacritic.

If that sounds a bit too laid back for you, then you may want to hold on for 16 April when Assassin’s Creed Syndicate becomes available. It’s easy to lose track of Assassin’s Creed games given there’s so damned many of them, but this one is set in London which should appeal to our UK readers, and actually has a pretty solid 78% average rating on Metacritic.

As usual, there are also two Xbox 360 games up for grabs, and both are playable on the Xbox One. First up on 1 April is animated movie tie-in Cars 2 which is probably worth booting up if you have literally nothing else to do. Fortunately, that slightly bitter taste is taken away by the brilliant Dead Space 2 which replaces it on 16 April and is a delightfully entertaining sci-fi horror romp (I still remember that cutscene in the medical bay late on. It was at the back of my mind when I interviewed a laser eye surgeon…)

All in all, that’s a pretty decent selection, and well worth the monthly subscription cost. Combine your Gold account with the recently improved Microsoft Game Pass, and you could avoid every buying a boxed game again…
