PS Plus April 2018: The free PlayStation games for April are a mixed bag

Hot on the heels of the Xbox Games with Gold April reveal, Sony has shown its hand in the “free games for a monthly subscription” game. The selection, while not bad, isn’t quite as good as Microsoft’s this month, and is a bit of as step down from March, where we got the critically acclaimed Bloodborne for nothing.

Still, you can’t expect that kind of quality every month, and in the greater scheme of things, the April selection for PS Plus isn’t too shabby. Case in point: Mad Max, an open-worlder released shortly after the release of Fury Road. By the looks of Metacritic, you can expect a competent, if somewhat formulaic, open world adventure in the mould of Shadow of Mordor or Batman Arkham City. Sounds alright to me.

Next up is Trackmania Turbo, an entertaining hybrid of racing game and physics puzzler. Perhaps the most intriguing part of this is the extensive multiplayer options for both online and split-screen play. It even has PSVR support, should you have a headset. It’s averaging an impressive 81% on Metacritic.

Elsewhere, it gets a lot less inspiring – unless you happen to be an enormous fan of Q*Bert. The Rebooted version is available for PS4, PS3 and Vita but isn’t actually very good. PS3 title In Space We Brawl doesn’t fare much better, and Toy Home completes the set of last generation mediocrity. Finally, Vita owners get 99vidas: an indie brawler with – you guessed it – middling reviews.

These games go live on 3 April, meaning you still have a few days to grab March’s games… and if you haven’t downloaded Bloodborne yet, then stop whatever you’re doing now and add it to your download list on the Sony website.
