The Google Pixel 2/2 XL comes with US English set as the default language. But what happens if that’s not your native language? Bilingual people might also want to have a language other than English on their phone.
Whichever way you look at it, changing the default language is a rather useful feature. While at it, you may as well change the keyboard language to match your preferences.
These changes are simple and you can quickly go back to US English if you have a change of heart.
How to Change the Google Pixel 2/2 XL Language
Follow the steps below to select one of the many languages that your Pixel offers.
1. Launch Settings
Hit the gear icon on the phone’s Home screen to go into the Settings menu.
2. Tap System
Swipe to the bottom of the Settings menu and access System.
3. Select Language Input & Gestures
This is the first option that appears in the System menu. Tap on it to reach the current Language.
4. Hit Language
Open the Language preferences by tapping on it, then select Add a Language.
5. Choose a Language
Swipe the list of available languages and select the one you prefer to add it. You can also hit the magnifying glass icon to search manually.
How to Change the Keyboard Language
As hinted in the introduction, you can also easily change the keyboard language to match your preferences. This feature is particularly useful if you speak languages like Arabic or Hindi that don’t use the standard Latin alphabet.
1. Launch an App
You can open any app with a search bar which triggers the keyboard.
2. Tap on the Soft Arrow
There is a soft arrow on the left, just above the keyboard. Tap on it to reveal more actions.
3. Hit the Three Dots
Open the More menu by tapping on the three dots on the right.
4. Select Settings
Select Languages from the top of the menu then hit the Add Keyboard button.
5. Choose a Keyboard Language
Once you select the keyboard, choose the keyboard layout and settings, then tap on Add.
Note: Switch between different keyboards by tapping on the globe icon next to the spacebar on your keyboard.
Additional Language Options
Apart from changing the language, there are a few other language options you can tweak. These may not be in the same place as on other Android devices, so it’s useful to know how to find them.
Settings > System > Language Input & Gestures > Virtual keyboards > Gboard > Text Correction
The Text Correction menu allows you to change a bunch of language input features. For example, you can toggle off autocorrect, block offensive words, or hide the suggestion strip.
It’s worth noting that these features are designed to work primarily with US English, so it may be difficult to customize them for other languages.
