Google Pixel 2/2XL – Sound Not Working – What to Do?

A lack of sound on your Google Pixel 2/2XL might catch you by surprise, especially if you haven’t turned it off deliberately. Thankfully, you can quickly get to the bottom of the problem and get the sound back.

Google Pixel 2/2XL - Sound Not Working - What to Do?

There are a few things you can do to find the culprit. The following guide provides you with some common troubleshooting tips and tricks. You should give them all a try before you take your phone to a repair shop.

Check the Volume

The first place to look for a solution is the volume settings. There is a possibility that you’ve inadvertently turned it all the way down.

1. Press the Volume Rockers

Press the Volume Up button to turn it up. The phone’s screen shows the volume level, so you will know right away if this is where the problem lies.

2. Check the Mute Icon

The Mute icon is located above the volume slider. A crossed out mute icon indicates that your Google Pixel 2/2XL is on mute. Tap to unmute it.

3. Inspect the Volume Settings

Tapping on the gear icon below the Volume slider gives you quick access to the sound settings. There are four different types of volume to adjust. Make sure that all the sliders are moved all the way to the right.

Silent Modes

Modes like Do Not Disturb (DND) and Airplane completely shut off the sounds on your Google Pixel 2/2XL. It is thus quite possible that you’ve turned on one or the other by accident. Here’s how to disable them:

Do Not Disturb

1. Go to Settings

Swipe to Sound and tap on it for more options, then select Do Not Disturb.

2. Toggle Off the Switches

Tap on the switches next to Alarms, Media, and Touch sounds to turn them off.

3. Disable Automatic DND

Make sure that the Turn On Automatically option is not enabled. Otherwise, your phone will go to DND at regular intervals.

You can also change the DND settings from the Control Center. Swipe down twice from the Home screen and tap the Do Not Disturb icon. Now you can select one of the options to ensure that your phone is not in Total Silence mode.

Airplane Mode

Follow the steps below to turn off Airplane mode:

Settings > Network & Internet > Toggle off the Airplane mode

It’s worth noting that the Airplane mode doesn’t really affect your sound. It does, however, cut off Bluetooth, data, and voice services, which can affect the sound in some apps.

Restart Your Google Pixel 2/2XL

If the methods listed above didn’t help, restarting your smartphone might. It may fix some app bugs that prevent the sound from coming through on your phone.

Simultaneously press and hold Volume Down and Power until the screen turns off, then release the buttons. You’ll feel a small vibration soon after, which signifies that your smartphone is restarting. After the phone reboots, you can check if you have successfully restored the sound by playing some video or music.

Conclusion

Besides the described methods, you might also need to update your phone or do a hard reset. If there is still no sound after the hard reset, the issue might have to do with the phone’s hardware. At that point, it would be best to take the device to a phone repair shop.
