Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 (750GB) review
The 750GB Hitachi Deskstar appears to offer poor value: it’s nearly twice the price per gigabyte of the 640GB drive, for instance, and offers only 110GB of extra storage.
Its results in our performance benchmarks, however, went some way to justifying the high price. While the two smaller Deskstar drives performed poorly, the 750GB disk – and its larger 1TB cousin – both achieved some of the best results in the Labs.
A score of 93.6MB/sec in our read test and 78.8MB/sec in our write benchmark comfortably put the 750GB Deskstar into the top half, and we saw an impressive burst speed of 239.2MB/sec. The average sequential read speed of 97.9MB/sec was also an impressive result.
The 750GB Deskstar has the same relatively meagre range of features as the other Hitachi drives – especially when compared with Western Digital’s disks – but improved performance makes the 750GB Deskstar worth considering, despite its high price.
