Huawei partners with Porsche on Porsche Design Mate 9

Huawei had a surprise up its sleeve today in Munich. While the Chinese manufacturer was widely predicted to announce its Mate 9 handset, Huawei also unveiled a partnership with Porsche.

It turns out the premium, curved-screen version of its Mate 9 will be Porsche-branded. Dubbed the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 9, this version of Huawei’s new phone will come with a 5.5in, 2K curved display with a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution.

Like the standard Mate 9, the Porsche Design handset features Huawei’s new Kirin 960 chip, an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, a dual 20- and 12-megapixel back camera and a big 4,000mAh battery.

“Huawei’s brand ethos mirrors our own commitment to premium innovation and functional design so we are delighted to partner with Huawei to bring high-performance individuals the smartphone that they demand, and deserve,” said Dr Jan Becker, COO and spokesperson of the Management Board of Porsche Design Group.

“Porsche Design is synonymous with excellence in innovation, unique design and perfection,” said Richard Yu, CEO of the Huawei Consumer Business Group. “The Porsche Design Huawei Mate 9 sets a new benchmark in design and performance and delivers a revolutionary smartphone experience that will enhance even the fastest-paced business and personal lifestyles.”

The Porsche Design Mate 9 will cost 1,395 Euros (no word yet on UK price) and will be available in European Porsche Design Stores starting in late December. It will then move to worldwide Porsche Design Stores (not counting the USA) and select Huawei stores in January 2017.
