One of two 24in TFTs to squeeze under our £200 price target, Iiyama’s new 1080p model has received a bit of a makeover from the ordinary grey styling of its smaller models. A glossy black finish instantly adds appeal, while the addition of an HDMI port to the usual DVI and D-SUB opens up the possibility of using it as a Full HD companion to a games console.

Out of the box the Iiyama was bright and cold in tone, so we needed to toy with the settings before testing. The positioning of the control buttons on the bottom-right underside makes tweaks a little less intuitive than we’d like, but we soon made the unusual choice of 5,400K colour as the most usable of the available options; 6,500K was far too cold for comfort, and while 5,400K was a little yellow at times, its warmth was infinitely preferable for this TFT’s intended uses.
We lowered the contrast a little to prevent lighter greys from washing out into white, and found the Iiyama to be a solid, if unspectacular performer in our tests. Its white level is better than black, with notable backlight bleed at the top and bottom of the panel, while gradients were smooth but unevenly distributed vertically. Movies looked good, but lacked the sharpness of smaller TFTs, while the overall colour tone sometimes drifted from the more neutral tones of the BenQ.
The PLE2407HDS’ speakers and HDMI port make it a solid entertainment choice at a good price. But we still prefer the extra lines of the Edge10’s 1,920 x 1,200 resolution, and that monitor’s flexible stand and lower price just about edge out the Iiyama in the 24in contest.
