iPhone XR – Device Is Charging Slow – What to Do?

In general, iPhones have always been known for their outstanding hardware and software quality, with charging problems seldom being the issue. However, if your iPhone XR is charging slowly or intermittently, there are several things you can try.

iPhone XR – Device Is Charging Slow – What to Do?

Check the Cable and USB Port

Instead of the original Apple cable, you might sometimes plug a third-party USB cable or charger into your iPhone XR. Commonly, it shouldn’t be a problem. However, some cables and chargers might be weaker or of poorer quality than Apple’s cable and thus charge your device slowly. Switch back to Apple’s proprietary cable.

Before switching to software troubleshooting, you should check your iPhone XR’s USB port. The problem might be the dust and dirt that’s piled up in the port. If that’s the case, clean the phone’s USB port and proceed to charge it as usual. Give your phone a couple of hours to resume charging. If it doesn’t happen or if it starts charging at a slower pace, move on to other troubleshooting methods.

Reset Your iPhone XR

With the Cable and USB port clean and working, the only other place left to look is your iPhone XR. Luckily, there are several things you can try before hoisting the white flag and calling in the cavalry. First, you should reboot your phone. Follow these steps to perform the soft reboot:

  1. Press the Side (Power) button and one of the volume buttons simultaneously. Hold them until you see the “Slide to Power Off” slider appear on the screen.
  2. Once it appears, release the buttons and swipe the slider from left to right.
  3. Leave the phone off for about 30 seconds and press the Side button again. Hold it until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
  4. When the phone turns on, charging should resume at a normal pace.

Reset All Settings

If you’ve changed and customized your iPhone XR’s settings before the problem occurred, you might want to reset them back to their default values. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Unlock your iPhone XR.
  2. Launch the “Settings” app from the phone’s Home screen.
  3. Tap the “General” tab.
  4. Once in the “General” section of the menu, go to the “Reset” section.
  5. Find and tap the “Reset all Settings” option. Have in mind that this is not a factory reset and that you will retain all your settings and passwords.
  6. Once the reset is complete, you will have to enable the Wi-Fi and some other features.

Update iOS

One of the last things you can try before calling it quits is to update your iPhone XR to the latest version of iOS. Sometimes random bugs and system errors might cause the phone to charge slowly. However, to be able to update iOS, you will have to have internet access and at least 50% charge left on your battery. If you have less, wait until the battery is sufficiently charged.

  1. Unlock your phone.
  2. Tap the “Settings” app icon on the phone’s Home screen.
  3. Tap the “General” tab.
  4. Go to the “Software update” section.
  5. When the update process completes, reboot your phone.

Wrapping Up

Charging issues can present quite an unpleasant problem, preventing you from enjoying your iPhone XR to the full extent. However, you should be able to solve the problem with the methods described in this article. If they all fail, consider taking your phone to a repair shop.
