iPhone XS Max – Forgot PIN Password – What to Do

Apple prides itself on how good of a job it does to protect its users’ personal info. From a variety of minor security functions to revolutionary technologies such as the Face ID, it’s safe to say that pretty much no other company can compare to Apple in terms of data security.

However, this can backfire if you get locked out of your iPhone. If you enter the wrong PIN six times, you’ll see a message saying that your iPhone is disabled.

Your iPhone doesn’t know that it’s you that forgot the passcode and just want to access your phone. It blocks any entrance to your data, so the only thing you can do is reset the password. However, this comes at a price.

Resetting Your iPhone from Recovery Mode

The only thing you can do after you’ve been locked out of your device is to reset it to its original state. This doesn’t just remove your password but all your data as well. Hopefully, you’ve backed up as much data as you could before this happened. If not, starting from scratch is your only option.

Whatever the case might be, here’s how to reset your iPhone via recovery mode:

  1. Connect your XS Max to your computer and open iTunes.
  2. With the phone connected, force restart it:
    • Press and release the Volume Up Do the same with the Volume Down button. Then, hold the Side button up till the recovery mode screen appears.
  3. You’ll see the option to either restore or update your iPhone. Click Restore.
  4. When the process is finished, set up your iPhone from scratch. If you have created a backup before getting locked out, you’ll be able to restore your data.

Resetting Your iPhone via iTunes

This method only works if your iPhone is synced with iTunes. It’s a slightly more convenient way of resetting it, so here’s what to do:

  1. Connect your iPhone to the computer it’s synced with.
  2. Open iTunes. If you’re asked for a passcode, use another device you’ve synced with or try the recovery mode from the previous method.
  3. Wait until iTunes is synced with your iPhone and make a backup.
  4. After these processes are finished, click Restore *iPhone name*.

The reason why this is a much better solution is because it creates a backup before erasing everything. You can reset your password and access your iPhone again without any data loss. Once you reach the setup screen, just download everything from the backup, and you can pick up where you left off before you forgot your password.

The Final Word

Much like every other iPhone, the XS Max can be accessed by following the above methods. You should always make sure that your device is synced with iTunes so that you don’t have to set up your iPhone from scratch if you forget your password.

I don’t use iTunes to avoid complications from being charged for something I never approve or use. Other than the iTunes backup, is there a better way to back up my phone in case of being locked out for forgetting the pass code? I have iCloud back up but it’s limited to 5 Gigabytes, and it was full! Is it too late to increase the iCloud capacity now before resetting my phone? It’s a iPhone XS Max.
