iPhone XS Max Keeps Restarting – What to Do

When you’ve paid as much for a device as you have for your iPhone XS Max, random restarts are the last thing you want to experience. In a perfect world, you should be able to rely on a phone of such power in any situation.

However, despite all its impressive specs, you might face this issue at one point or another. If you do, you’ll be happy to know that this is often not that big of a deal, since there are several things you can do to fix this issue by yourself.

Keep Your Apps Up-to-Date

Many people consider app updates to be nothing more than feature improvements. This isn’t always true. In many cases, developers roll out updates to fix any faulty aspects of an app. These updates are referred to as ‘patches’ or ‘bug fixes’.

The issues that these apps might have don’t just affect their own functionality but might also cause your entire OS to glitch, which can result in random restarts. Here’s how to ensure you’re using the latest versions of your apps:

1. Open the App Store.

2. Tap the Updates section in the bottom-right.

3. Tap Update All in the upper-right corner.

Another thing you can do is set your phone to automatically update apps while you’re using a Wi-Fi connection. Here’s how:

1. Go to Settings.

2. Tap iTunes & App Store.

3. Under Automatic Downloads, toggle Updates

If an app you’re using is discontinued and/or no longer updated, you might have to delete it to solve this issue. Tap and hold on the app that you want to uninstall and then press the X button.

Turn Airplane Mode On/Off

Sometimes, issues with the cellular or Wi-Fi network might cause your iPhone to restart on its own. To check whether this is the solution, try turning on Airplane Mode. Simply drag down the Control Center from the upper-right corner and then tap the plane icon.

Try leaving your phone like this for some time. If the restarts are no longer happening, this is likely the cause. After you turn Airplane Mode off, all your connections will restart and the problem should be solved.

Restore Your iPhone in DFU Mode

Restoring your iPhone in Device Firmware Update (DFU) mode should fix the issue when nothing else does. This is the deepest restore level, so it should fix most software-related issues. Here’s how to do it:

1. Connect your iPhone to the computer.

2. With your device connected, press and release the Volume Up button, then do the same with the Volume Down

3. Press and hold the Power button until the screen turns black.

4. Hold the Volume Down button while holding the Power

5. After 5 seconds, release the Power button while still holding down the Volume Down button until you see your phone in iTunes.

6. Let go of the Volume Down button.

7. Follow the steps for restoring your phone.

If your iPhone is facing occasional restarts, the first two methods might do the trick. If it’s stuck in boot loop, restoring in DFU Mode should fix it since the phone is able to communicate with iTunes even when it’s switched off.
