The PC Card slot will support a Type III card, although the single connector inside means only a single Type II or Type I card can be used at a time. Connections include serial, PS/2, D-SUB, mini-FireWire and a replicator. There’s only one USB 2 port, though. Lastly, there’s an optional smart card reader to offer fingerprint security.
Usually there’s a catch somewhere and, in this case, it’s the hefty 4.4kg weight and chunky 310 x 252 x 74mm dimensions. That’s not allowing for the antenna or large carry handle either, so there won’t be any volunteers to shift it long distances. Unfortunately, that goes hand-in-hand with this level of ruggedness, as does the similarly hefty price tag.
The GoBook III ticks all the boxes you’d expect for a rugged laptop: battery life; comprehensive radio options; touchscreen; built like a house. But it’s the performance that lifts it above the competition, and if you need to run demanding applications in harsh environments this is highly recommended.
