This dongle adds a home button to the iPhone X

Having successfully (kind of) killed the 3.5mm headphone jack with the iPhone 7, Apple took to removing another useful feature for the iPhone X: the home button. You can still get one by buying an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, of course, but if you want the full OLED screen and all-singing, all-dancing Animoji, then you’d need to swallow the lost home button.

Maybe you thought you could do without the home button – lots of Android devices don’t have one, after all – but if you are missing it, then help is at hand with this extremely functional dongle, which undoes all of Jony Ive’s design handiwork in one ugly misstep.

For $25.99 (that’s around £19), you can get a dongle that plugs in through the Lightning port and gives you back that physical home button you’ve been missing. As an added bonus, it also throws in a 3.5mm headphone jack – because if you’re resurrecting one feature, you may as well resurrect another, I suppose. It won’t make your iPhone suddenly run Flash, though.

As you can see in the video below from EverythingApplePro, it works – and it’s quite a lot more responsive than the virtual home button. On top of that, you can charge the phone and listen to music at the same time. And because it has a flat bottom, you can actually stand your iPhone X vertically, should you like to live life on the edge.

No Touch ID, of course, but you can’t have everything. Well, you can, but that would involve selling your iPhone X and buying an iPhone 8.

In all seriousness, what this does show is that while there are plenty of things Apple was right to kill off, some things are clearly missed – and people are prepared to go to strange lengths to get them back. And better this way than by mutilating your handset with a drill.
