Technology companies spend a lot of time ensuring you don’t see what makes their hardware tick, but some of us just love to see the messy insides of everything. No doubt that’s why some people opt to become surgeons – that and the whole “saving lives” thing.
For everyone else, there is a way to see the inside of the Samsung Galaxy S8 in all its circuity glory… but it’s certainly an operation that isn’t for everyone. YouTuber JerryRigEverything is one of the few with the guts to try, and it took him just over an hour and a lot of patience by the looks of things. You’ll need a certain amount of bravery to follow in his footsteps if you don’t want to end up with a £679 brick.
As well as being quite precise surgery, there are a couple of drawbacks to this – and not just having a Samsung employee laughing in your face if you try to get a repair under warranty. After stripping the paint off the inside of the glass using paint thinner, JerryRigEverything finds that the NFC chip for wireless charging prevents a clear view of the circuitry, so that’s stripped out as is half of the loudspeaker plastic. This, of course, means that the phone won’t wirelessly charge anymore, but the surgery also means that the phone no longer keeps its IP68 water resistant rating for obvious reasons.
Still, if you can live with those compromises, it’s certainly a unique look for the smartphone. Companies seem reluctant to show off the insides of the tech nowadays – which is a shame, especially if you lusted after one of those transparent Game Boys back in the day…
