Xiaomi is often referred to as the “Apple of China”, and is amassing a cult following for its attractive business model. Indeed, even the titanic Google has lost out to Xiaomi, with former Android vice president Hugo Barra jumping ship to join the latter’s staff (he has since moved back to Silicon Valley).

And in October, it released the follow-up to its original handset – the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. Here is everything you need to know about the handset.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 release date and price

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 launched two days before Apple’s iPhone 8, on 10 September and began shipping on 14 October. 

Xiaomi doesn’t currently retail its products in the UK or US, so it’s not possible to buy the Mi Mix 2 easily – although some retailers may import if for you.

The Mi Mix 2 comes with 64-, 128- or 256GB of storage with RRPs of 3299-, 3599- and 3999 RMB respectively. This converts to £380, £420 and £465 respectively.

The original Xiaomi Mi Mix sported a gorgeous edgeless display before this became the go-to for smartphone designers and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 follows in its older sibling’s stylish footsteps.

And while both Apple and Essential have previously proved unable to proffer a fully all-encompassing display with their flagships, Xiaomi has conducted a made a valiant effort in this field. 

Made of 7-series aluminium, the phone is 12% smaller than its predecessor. At the top, where you would typically find the speaker, sensors and camera is an ultrasonic proximity sensor and sound-guided speaker.

The Mi Mix 2 has a 5.99in display, protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 4, with an 18:9 ratio and a resolution of 1080 x 2160, giving the phone a PPI of 403. 

It runs Android 7.1 Nougat and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset. Inside is 6GB RAM and a 3,400mAh battery. 

Camera-wise, there is a 12MP on the rear and a 5MP on the front, and the handset itself weighs 185g and measures 151.8mm x 75.5mm x 7.7 mm.
