An upcoming smartphone from OPPO will be coming equipped with Gorilla Glass 6, announced Corning, the latter’s manufacturer. The move will help fortify the smartphones in question – thought to be the OPPO F9 and F9 Pro – against breakage, scratches and general wear and tear.
Gorilla Glass 6 was released last month by Corning, promising better protection against phone droppage. The material, purports Corning, is able withstand myriad smartphone tumbles – we’re talking in the region of 15 drops from the height of one metre. To be honest, if you’re dropping your smartphone more than that in its lifetime, you probably don’t deserve to have one.
The Gorilla Glass 6 is the successor to the Gorilla Glass 5, with the former touted as significantly more scratch and drop-resistant than its younger sibling. In fact, the company has stressed that the material is twice as durable as its predecessor, a feat that’s attributed largely to an overhauled chemical composition.

And where can we expect to see this revolutionary technology make an appearance? Corning recently announced that Gorilla Glass 6 will debut in OPPO’s upcoming smartphone. Although the exact model to debut Gorilla Glass 6 hasn’t been announced as such, recent teasers suggest it will be the imminent OPPO F9 and F9 Pro.
The F9 and F9 Pro smartphones from OPPO are expected to launch later this month, amidst much fanfare. And that’s not likely to be quelled any time soon with the news that OPPO’s latest will likely feature Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6.

If you’re a UK or US dweller and you’re hoping to get your hands on them soon, however, you’ve got a bit of a wait ahead of you. The F9 will be launched in Vietnam, with its Pro variation unveiled in India. More details regarding the F9’s global availability will likely follow shortly, so watch this space.
As for what to expect from the smartphones themselves? The F9 and the F9 Pro are rumoured to come with a smaller cutout at the front, and to sport glass backs with a colour gradient effect.
