NEC MultiSync EA244UHD review

NEC’s MultiSync EA244UHD looks like a deceptively ordinary monitor. However, it’s anything but. NEC has packed the compact, 24in chassis with a 4K panel and oodles of high-end features. See also: The 9 best monitors from £200 to £2,000

We thought the 28in 4K monitors we’ve reviewed – the Dell P2815Q and Asus PB287Q – were breathtakingly sharp, but we weren’t prepared for the EA244UHD. With a pixel density of 184ppi, the screen isn’t anywhere near as pixel-packed as a high-end smartphone, but onscreen images have such clarity and punch that it’s impossible not to be impressed.

NEC MultiSync EA244UHD review: image quality

Despite its relatively small screen size, the EA244UHD produces the finest 4K image quality we’ve seen. The NEC’s 10-bit IPS panel and W-LED backlight make for a sterling combination, serving up even backlighting and a gloriously realistic palette of colour. In our backlight tests, the NEC’s brightness varied by no more than 3.8% across the whole panel.

Viewing angles are excellent, too, with barely any colour shift from even the most extreme angles. The NEC’s IPS panel couldn’t quite match the 28in 4K TN panels we’ve reviewed in our response-time tests, with markedly more smearing visible on fast-moving objects, but crucially the EA244UHD supports a 60Hz signal via its DisplayPort input, so both cursor control and games are silky smooth.

NEC MultiSync EA244UHD review

Like its larger stablemate, the MultiSync PA272W, the EA244UHD has a variety of pre-calibrated picture presets, including sRGB and Adobe RGB emulation modes. Unusually, the NEC is also suitable for medical imaging applications thanks to a factory-calibrated DICOM simulation mode.

Pitted against our X-Rite colorimeter, the NEC came out swinging. In sRGB mode, it covered 99.4% of the sRGB colour gamut with an average Delta E of 1.24 and a maximum Delta E of 2.38. Colour temperature was close to ideal, too, at 6,652K. In Adobe RGB mode, the monitor fared even better, and while it covered less of the Adobe RGB colour space – 96.6% – it did so with an average Delta E of 0.84 and a maximum of 2.06.

NEC MultiSync EA244UHD review: features and connectivity

NEC has equipped the EA244UHD with all the essential features. There are pairs of HDMI, DisplayPort and DVI inputs, and the second HDMI port supports MHL connections from compatible smartphones and tablets. To round off proceedings, there’s a three-port USB 3 hub, and automatic brightness and presence sensors. Just like NEC’s other MultiSync models, however, hardware calibration isn’t on the cards.

NEC MultiSync EA244UHD review: verdict

The EA244UHD justifies its high price by delivering the finest 4K images we’ve laid our eyes on. Those looking for an affordable high-end display should opt for the 27in MultiSync PA272W instead, but, if the huge pixel density and compact figure appeals, the EA244UHD is a fine choice.
