LG Electronics has announced that it’s launching its own mobile apps store, as looks to match the success of Apple’s pioneering service.
The LG Application Store will initially launch in Singapore, Malaysia and Australia, with the company eyeing a European launch by the end of the year.
According to LG, it will provide 1,400 applications including 100 free programs, available in 15 languages at launch. There will be 2,000 applications by the time it hits Europe.
Phone makers and mobile firms worldwide are in a race to match the success of Apple’s App Store, creating their own virtual stores where users can download software and content. Both Nokia and RIM have recently announced their own entrants to the market dominated by Apple.
LG has not set any firm plan to launch the marketplace in the US, the stronghold of the iPhone and RIM’s Blackberry.
