Wikipedia jumps on iPhone app bandwagon
Wikipedia is the latest service to make an appearance on the iPhone, with the online encyclopaedia launching an offical app.
Other developers have previously created apps that help users access Wikipedia’s content when on the move, but this app – dubbed Wikipedia Mobile – is the first one to officially come from the site’s stable.
Some may question the need for this app when users can already access the site’s three-million-plus articles using the iPhone’s Safari browser, but the Wikimedia Foundation claims that this app will make accessing such information even easier for users.
“This is our official application and we are working hard on making the absolute best Wikipedia app out there,” the company says. “The app is focused on being very simple and very fast. Over time, we’ll add features based on requests.”
The foundation is also calling on the programming community to get involved and help move the app forward.
