Mr Bean invades EU site

Hackers have attacked Spain’s EU Presidency website, replacing the picture of the country’s Prime Minister with an image of Mr Bean.

The similarity between Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and Rowan Atkinson’s bumbling comedy counterpart is a long-standing joke among the Spanish press.

The hack has now been fixed, though for a few hours on Monday, visitors to the site were greeted by a smiling image of Mr Bean and the words “Hi there”.

The Spanish government claims the changing of the picture represents the full extent of the damage to the site, and that no data was compromised. The attack was described as minor, though the site was unavailable while it was being repaired.

In a statement the government claims the hacker had used a cross-site scripting attack, which allows code to be inserted into vulnerable websites.

It is now investigating the matter to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
