Microsoft is ready to unveil a tablet device this week, potentially stealing Apple’s thunder ahead of its own January announcement.

The story is being reported in the The New York Times, which claims that Ballmer will make the announcement during his CES keynote.
Though details of the device are light, it’s being suggested that the tablet will be built in partnership with HP and will be a “multimedia whiz with e-reader and multi-touch functions.”
Quite what Microsoft brings to this party is unclear, given that Windows 7 contains the wealth of Microsoft’s multitouch technology.
The newspaper cites unnamed sources and both Microsoft and HP have refused to comment on the device. However, if the report proves accurate the tablet would undoubtedly be one of the biggest surprises of the show.
It could also prove incredibly risky. Apple is almost certain to announce its own tablet later this month, and should Microsoft’s own effort fall short, it would hand even more momentum to Cupertino.
