Gates joins Twitter – and gains 150,000 followers overnight

He may have taken his time getting his account up and running, but Microsoft founder Bill Gates has hit Twitter with a bang.

Gates joins Twitter - and gains 150,000 followers overnight

The semi-retired Microsoft chairman issued the first tweet from his @BillGates account at around 8pm UK time on Tuesday evening. By 9am this morning, he’d already attracted in excess of 150,000 followers.

Gates is now devoting his full-time energies to the charitable foundation he founded with his wife, and his early tweets have focused on that very subject.

“Hello World. Hard at work on my foundation letter – publishing on 1/25,” was the content of Gates’s first Twitter message.

In the meantime, he’s also found time to issue replies to US talent show host Ryan Seacrest and perhaps the most famous Twitterer of all, Demi Moore’s husband Ashton Kutcher. Although to be fair to his Billness, the messages to Seacrest focused on aid efforts for the earthquake in Haiti.

Among the 40 Twitter accounts Gates is currently following are Queen Rania of Jordan, CERN and, of course, Microsoft Bing.
