Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg today met with UK government leaders to discuss digital engagement.

Ministers talk digital engagement with Facebook founder

Zuckerberg is in London to speak at the Facebook Developer Garage, but spent some of the morning with new Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

The Tory MP said over Twitter: “Just met Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook. Really smart guy with some good ideas on improvement [sic] digital engagement in policy making.”

Facebook representatives at the developer event at the Barbican Centre in London wouldn’t say what had been discussed, but did confirm the meeting had taken place and that Prime Minister David Cameron “popped in”.

Joanna Shields, the new vice president of Facebook in Europe, said she’d had “something big” to work on this morning, and seemed amused that the ministers decided to tweet about the otherwise private meeting. “We kept a good secret there,” she said.

The meeting comes as the coalition government has said it will keep Martha Lane Fox as its so-called “digital champion”, after the web entrepreneur was given the post by the previous Labour government.
