Apple sells three million iPads

The iPhone 4 has a lot to live up to when it goes on sale this week following stellar sales of its sibling the iPad.

Apple sells three million iPads

Apple says it has sold three million units of its tablet computer in the 80 days since it was launched.

That means the device is currently selling more quickly than it did in the first two months after launch. Apple had sold two million iPads after nearly two months, averaging sales of about 33,800 a day. It has added another million in sales over the last three weeks, averaging over 47,600 a day.

Of course, the iPad is now available in more countries than it was at launch.

It also suggests the iPad is outselling Mac computers. Analysts estimate Apple shifts 120,000 Mac computers a week, while the iPad has sold an average 260,000 per week since launch.

The iPhone 4 is expected by many to top even those sales, after its predecessor the iPhone 3GS sold a reported three million in just one month after launch.

The news comes the day after the arrival of iOS4 – the fourth iteration of the operating system that runs on the iPhone as well as the iPad.
